PH -- Lesson Plan #1 for science unit Plants
potential Hydrogen (pH) scale

Introduction
The potential Hydrogen or pH scale is used to describe the number or hydrogen ions in a given volume of water solution.

ILLSTRATION OF HYDEROGEN ATOM

Objective
Explain how acids and bases are related to the pH scale.
Vocabulary
Water cycle
pH scale
Acid
Base
Neutral

Materials
pH Kit
Ocean water
Tap water
Lake water
Rain water

ILLSTRATION OF COLOR SCALE FOR pH

Procedure
Have student follow directions on the pH scale kits to test for acid in the water sample
NOTE* : This activity is for students to familiarize them selves with the pH scale kits.
The readings of the pH scale for water samples should be between 5.6
(normal rain fall)
To 7 (neutral distilled water).

Discussion Questions
1. What is the average reading of each of the different samples of water?
2. What is the difference between acid, neutral , and base on the pH scale?
3. Did any of the samples read lower than 5.6 and did any read higher than 7
4. What is the average readings between the entire samples in the class
